The Comarcal Council has hosted the presentation of the MTB-O El Bierzo League, organized by the ‘El Bierzo, Healthy Revolution’ association, aiming to allocate part of the proceeds to the fight against cancer. This initiative will cover various iconic locations in the region through eight routes, one of which is the Capercaillie Route that will pass through Bierzo Alto.

The start and finish are set at the Bembibre Arena pavilion, guiding participants through the Bierzo Alto, including Folgoso de la Ribera, Boeza, Igüeña (where a checkpoint is established), Colinas del Campo, the Gistredo paragliding launch area, Primout, Gualta Waterfalls (all three also with checkpoints), and the sulfur spring.

Overall, the route covers a distance of 91.2 kilometres with a positive elevation gain of 2,640 meters.

MTB-O is a stage-based sporting event, focusing on mountain bike orienteering in a virtual sport format. This combines physical activity on the ground with technology to promote the most notable points of interest in the region to a global social media community.

The competition involves visiting different checkpoints set for each stage in the shortest possible time.

The event is divided into eight stages: Through the History of Coal (Ponferrada); Las Médulas and its Roman canals (Carucedo); Silence Valley (Ponferrada); Capercaillie Route and Healing Waters (Bembibre); Alto Sil, the Land of the Yogi (Palacios del Sil); Ancares Biosphere Reserve I (Fabero); Ancares Biosphere Reserve II (Balboa); and Wolfram Route (Corullón).

This initiative is carried out under the “virtual sport” format, combining physical activity on the ground with technology to highlight the key points of interest in El Bierzo. Participants must visit the checkpoints in the shortest time possible.
